Does my Shopify store need a cookie banner?
If you sell to customers in the EU or UK, yes: Shopify stores run analytics, advertising pixels, and apps that set non-essential cookies, and those need opt-in consent before they run. If you sell to California, you also need a working opt-out for the sale or sharing of personal data, which a consent tool provides.
What a standard Shopify store loads
Beyond Shopify's own functional cookies, a typical store runs Google Analytics, the Meta pixel, TikTok and Pinterest tags, review apps, upsell apps, and email capture popups. Most of these set tracking cookies the moment a page loads, which is exactly what EU and UK rules require consent for.
The app layer is the risk
Each Shopify app you install can inject its own scripts and cookies into your storefront. Store owners often do not know which apps track visitors. Your consent banner needs to cover all of them, and your cookie policy needs to list what they set.
Setting it up correctly
Use a consent tool that integrates with Shopify's customer privacy API so apps can read the visitor's choice, blocks non-essential pixels before consent in Europe, presents an opt-out for US visitors where required, and keeps an accurate, automatically updated cookie list.
